Mommy Confession

A couple weeks ago I planned on taking a late night Target trip after Kyla was in bed.  Late night for me is 8:30 by the way.  But after dinner she was being wild and we both desperately needed to get out of the house.  So I took her along for some Mommy/daughter shopping.

I had to drop off a prescription and they needed about 20 minutes to fill it so we continued to walk around.  I decided to go down the toy aisles.  Kyla doesn't cry for toys or reach for them.  So for some stupid reason, I decided to show her this Vtech laptop and let her try it out.

I picked up my prescription, finished my grocery shopping and headed back to the toy aisle to put the laptop back.  Can you guess what happened next?

Yes, you're right, she freaked out!  I will never be the mom that lets her child scream and cry in the store.  But I couldn't just leave all my stuff right there and go home.  So, I gave it back to her to avoid being that mom.  So I guess instead of being the mom with the screaming child, I am the mom who let her 21 month old win.

I tried to put it away at the checkout line too.  I have no idea why I thought the result would be different.

She played with the thing the whole way home and until it was time for bed that night.  When she was in bed, I hid it in our closet and I'm going to wrap it up for Christmas.  She doesn't even remember having it and at least I know she'll love one of her presents.  So I guess it wasn't a total fail.

It was my first tantrum in a store and it was 100% my fault.  Why did I think it was a good idea to show it to her?  She was absolutely fine just looking around.

Lesson learned!

  1. LOL...I always take my girls to play in the toy aisle at stores, but luckily they have only thrown a fit for a toy once or twice. Raya's new thing is that whenever she see's a toy she likes she tells me "I'm going to ask Santa to bring me this!" ....her list is up to about 30 things haha....but I'm confidentthat she has already forgotten about almost all of them so hopefully Santa doesn't get in trouble for not bringing it all this year LOL

  2. Haha! We have all been there, done that! I remember when Rylee was about Kyla's age and I did the same thing with this Backyardigans radio. She pushed the buttons and played the music all the way around the store. When it was time to put it back, she had a death grip on it and started screaming and crying when I tried to get it out. So, I too, was that mom! :)

  3. Ahhh- this is what I always panic about when I think about having my own kids, lol! I feel like I'll be the parent that ALWAYS lets the kid win and then I'll be a failure and have a brat, lol!

I think you did the perfect thing though!! Now you have a lil Christmas shopping done and like you said, she'll love it!! :)

  4. Haha---I guess you are checking off that Christmas list! That's one of the reasons I hardly run errands with the boys---I have been there done that, we all have:)

  5. OMG! This reminds me of my shopping trip with my oldest son (he's 9 now) to Walgreens! He would throw the worst tantrums in there when I wouldn't let him have anything in the toy aisle! So embarrassing!

  6. Good idea to wrap it up for Christmas!! Olivia did this when we were shopping for our nieces bday gift. She was all excited for this laugh and learn toy so I figured if she likes it, we picked a good gift! Haha

  7. Oh Mama! This story is hilarious, only because I can totally see this happening to me. Mine are 21 months also, so I know it's coming someday. I've been thinking of getting them that laptop too, your idea of hiding it and wrapping it for Christmas is a good one!

  8. That's the worst! My little guy hasn't made it to full meltdown mode in a store yet. Just at home. And I won't be the mom who let's her kids that either....at least I think I won't ;-)
