Tot School Introduction

I have mentioned Tot School a couple times in previous posts.  But now that Kyla is almost one, I am really starting to make plans for us to do it.  Here is a little background on Tot School that I got from 1+1+1=1.  I read her blog all the time and will get a lot of my ideas and activities from her (all of the following text is directly from her site).  For even more information, check out her page.  I just selected what stood out to me.

Tot School is nothing more than intentionally providing your tot with age appropriate activities that are fun and engaging.  By choosing specific toys and activities, we expose our tots to a variety of early learning skills.  Mastery is not the goal, FUN is!

-Learning at a young age should be child led and immersed in PLAY.
-Learning should be fun and exciting, filled with many different experiences.
-Do not overwhelm the child!
-A lot of a good thing is GREAT!

I will be starting Tiny Tot School next week to get Kyla introduced to our new school time.  She will graduate to regular Tot School when she is 12 months!  At first, I plan on only doing 15 minutes a day and I will sit down with her and choose specific toys and activities for us to do.  The activities will be new to her and somewhat challenging, but not to the point of frustration.  And if she's not interested, we will do something else.  I want to expose her to new learning skills, but at her own pace.  She will learn the skills eventually so there is no need to force it.  But my hope is that the activities are fun for her so she will be interested in them.

I love this page because it has activities listed by ages, starting with 10 months!  And you can link up with her, which I will be doing each week, to share your ideas and also read about what other Tot School mom's are doing!

I'm sure some of you are probably going to think it's silly.  And that's ok.  Even though Kyla and I play and read books throughout every day, I am excited for her to look forward to this "special" time.  I will plan activities for us, but she will be the one to decide what we do and for how long.

I'm really excited to start our Tot School journey.  Please let me know if you are doing Tot School with your child(ren) or plan to.  I'd love to share ideas :)

  1. I've done tot school with Kaylee and she loved it. I need to get back into doing it again but with both the girls. Good luck

  2. Yay :-) I don't think it's silly at all, and anyone who does needs to read up on the importance of the early years in regards to lifelong learning!

I'm never done "offical" tot school but I also read that 1+1+1's great. Maybe I'll be motivated to plan something more official once you start doing it LOL. Right now my girls are at such different levels that I'd pretty much have to plan 2 different things, and so right now Brielle is usually left out--poor 2nd child
