Colors & shapes with Gianna

Gianna came over today and we had fun working on colors and shapes.  She already knows most of them, but I found some fun activities that I thought she'd like so I figured we'd review them.  The first thing we did this morning was make rainbow cupcakes.  She LOVED this!

Things you need for these:
white cake mix
food coloring (red, blue, yellow, green)
baking cups
six bowls
frosting - optional
sprinkles - required, haha :)

1.  Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the back of the box.

2.  Get a cute little helper to put the baking cups in the cupcake pan.

3.  Divide the cake batter evenly in the six bowls.

4.  Practice your colors with the food coloring.  "RED!"

5.  18 drops of red food coloring for the red batter.  Great counting practice too!

6.  Stir it up and watch the magic!  Gianna loved watching it turn colors.

7.  12 drops for the yellow.

8.  12 drops for the green.

9.  12 drops for the blue.

Kyla decided to wake up early from her nap.

10.  9 red drops and 6 blue drops to make the purple.

11.  12 yellow drops and 4 red to make the orange.

Gianna was so pumped about the orange.  She looked at Kyla and screamed "KYLA, IT'S TURNING ORANGE!"  It was so cute!

Our beautiful rainbow...

12.  Evenly distribute the purple batter first into the baking cups.  Sorry, my order of pictures from above is out of order.  Put the purple in first, then blue, green, yellow, orange and red.  I put a little too much purple in because I wasn't sure how much.  I learned as I went along though.  Gianna watched cartoons during this part because it was a little hard for her (and boring).  With a spoon, spread each color out in the baking cup so it covers the color under it and touches all the sides of the baking cup.

13.  Bake according to the directions on the back of box.  As you can see in the picture, a little bit of random colors got mixed in on the top, but if you frost them, nobody will be able to tell :)

14.  Frost and sprinkle the cupcakes.

15.  Enjoy!

While the cupcakes were baking, I got some paints out for Gianna.  We were planning on making puffy paint today, but since we still had a mess from the cupcakes, I decided to just use the paints I bought the other day.  I'll save the puffy paints for another day.

She used q-tips, sponge brushes and a squeeze bottle to paint with.  She loved the q-tips and squeeze bottle.

This made a fun splatter design :)

First masterpiece

Next, she did a color and shape puzzle.  She did awesome with this!

Yellow star!

Her artwork sitting out to dry.

She did the puzzle twice and when she finished each time she said "I'm ready for school now!"  It was so adorable.  She starts preschool tomorrow and she's so excited.  She's going to love it!

Thanks for the fun day Gianna.  Sorry Auntie didn't feel well so we didn't get to go to the park.  Next time, for sure!

And one quick cute picture of Kyla before bed tonight...
