Couponing Part 2

Yesterday I explained how I get my coupons and how I find out about good deals, without a lot of time spent.  Today I will get into a little more detail about how I actually use those coupons to get great deals.  Getting stuff for free (or close to it) after coupons is actually really easy and kinda fun!

I do most of my shopping for household items at Target.  They accept manufacturer coupons (MC) and Target coupons (TC) found on Target.com.  So for one product, you can use two coupons (one MC and one TC).  You can never use two MC's for one product.  A great example of this is some Nivea body wash for men that I got recently.  The price was $3.04 (I think that's the original price, not a sale price).  I had a $2 MC and printed a $1 TC to get the body wash for $0.04.  I could print the Target coupon twice and had two MC's so I got two bottles (Luckily Tyler isn't picky about his body wash).

Here are a few other examples of some great deals I've scored recently at Target:

Reach floss from Target was on sale for $0.97 and I had three coupons for $1 off so I got three for free!  Yes!  We don't go through tons of floss (I know, we should floss every night, but that doesn't always happen, forgive us).  But it doesn't expire (does it?) and it's free, so why not?  I usually only stock up on something if I happen to have several coupons and it's free.

Herbal Essences shampoo is $2.99 at Target.  I saw on Money Saving Mom that you could sign up on their website for a free bottle.  I put my name, address and email in and they mailed me a coupon for a free bottle of shampoo up to a $3.99 value.  And they have yet to email me with any spam (and if they do, you just have to unsubscribe at the bottom of the email).  There are tons of deals like this on websites and it's so easy!

Suave deodorant is $0.97 at Target (the smaller size).  I had three coupons for $0.75 off (one from my mom's paper and two from Cheryl) so I got 3 sticks of deodorant for $0.22 each.  Since I know I'll go through all three (not that I'm extra smelly but I do wear it every day lol), I don't mind stocking up for that cheap!

The travel size of Degree deodorant for men is $0.97 at Target.  I have four coupons for $1 off (one from my mom's paper and three from Cheryl) so I can get four sticks of deodorant for Tyler for free!  Granted, it's the travel size so it doesn't last long, but who cares, they are free!  I'm not sure how much the regular size of Degree is, but even after taking $1 off, it's not that great of a deal.

*Side note - You have to read the fine print on coupons because a lot of them will say excluding travel sizes.  But if they don't, you can usually get the travel size free (or close to it).  Also, don't be fooled by the picture on the coupon.  A lot of people think you can only use the coupon for the product shown in the picture, but that's not true.  For example, I had a bunch of coupons for Crest toothpaste.  The picture was for Crest Pro-Health, but the coupon said any Crest toothpaste 4.0 oz or larger.  Maybe these are obvious tidbits, but just things I've learned along the way.

My local grocery store (Burreson's) doubles any coupon $0.50 or less any day, which is awesome!  A lot of stores only do double coupons one day a week, some not at all.  Family Dollar doesn't double, but like Target, they allow you to stack coupons (manufacturer coupons with the Family Dollar coupons).  The Crest toothpaste that we use was on sale at Family Dollar for $2.  I had a $0.75 MC and $0.50 Family Dollar coupon so I got it for $0.75.  I was able to get about four of these at $0.75 each.  Great deal on the toothpaste we use anyway and use to pay close to $3 for.

At Burreson's, Dawn dish soap is $1.39.  I had a $0.50 manufacturer coupon that my store doubles to $1 so I got it for $0.39.  Thanks to my mom and Cheryl, I had a total of six of these coupons so I stocked up and gave my mom a few bottles :)  The same exact bottle is only $1.10 at Family Dollar, but since they don't double my coupon, I would pay $0.60 there.  So any coupons I have that are $0.50 or less, it usually makes sense to get at Burreson's so they double.

Like I said, I don't spend a ton of time doing this, but the time I do spend is totally worth it.  I have saved us a lot of money on the things we use anyway.  I do not believe in buying things for cheap if you don't normally use that product and it's just going to sit in the closet and collect dust.  However, if I see a deal for FREE stuff that I don't use, I will take the time to snag it up and either give it to family or donate it.

I know to those of you who don't coupon at all, this may seem a little crazy or extreme.  To me, it's just being smart and it's nowhere close to some of the extreme couponers I've seen.  I basically just wait until I hear about a good deal.  I don't have to do much work at all, but I think just the coupon talk makes people think I'm a little crazy.  That's ok though.  I'll be crazy getting my body wash for free while you spend $3 for yours :)

If you are interested in couponing, start buying the Sunday paper now to get a collection of coupons started.  If I find a good deal tomorrow and tell you about it, it will likely involve a coupon that I got a few weeks back so you wouldn't be able to get it.  Just start clipping and save them until the product goes on sale.

If anyone out there is interested in future deals I get, leave me a comment or send me an email (amykattre@gmail.com) and I will be happy to share them on here!  I don't want to bore all of you with the deals I get if nobody cares, lol!  But I'd be happy to share if anyone is interested in starting to coupon themselves or just want to get a free stick of deodorant here and there :)
